This 4 year engineering course has given us a lot. Lots of money, beautiful wife, high level friends, respect and opportunities to be always talked about among your relatives. Perhaps all these things are enough for any person to live life.

I have often heard people say, "Whoever has a lot of money and a beautiful wife, then he does not have any kind of tis left in life."

By the way, this saying of people is also true. After all, people earn money only because their family does not lack anything, or in other words, their beautiful wife and family do not have less money to spend their whole life.

Maybe I am also one of them because I believe the same.

Since childhood, I had a desire to earn a lot of money, buy vehicles, travel abroad and to fulfill this desire, I have left behind many important things in life other than Gully-Dande, Gully Cricket, Hide and Seek game which Maybe they were priceless.

As soon as my engineering was completed, I got placed in a software company in the software developer's room. Due to getting a job, my family members fixed my marriage. The girl was from a distant relative's family. His family members were very wealthy, due to which some dowry was also received as a gift.

I was very happy with this marriage. Now there was no complaint left with life. Because along with a good career, a good life partner was also found.

After marriage, I shifted to Delhi with my wife and since then till now I live in Delhi with my wife Pratima. Now I also have a son who has completed 10 years of his age only last month. Ever since I shifted to Delhi, I have never wanted to go back to my village, the broken roads and backward settlements there never make me excited to come back to my side. This is the reason why I have never gone back to my village after job. But due to the stubbornness of my son, I am taking him to the village. Apart from my parents, there is also a grandmother in the village who often tells me on the phone, “Son, have you ever come to the village, at least before you die, come and meet me once.” What will he do after earning so much money?

Hearing these words of grandmother, I would just smile a little and say, "I will come, grandmother, I will come soon."

Couldn't go soon but today after 12 years I am going to my village. I am accompanied by my wife Pratima and my son Suraj.

“Papa, how long will we stay with Grandpa?” My son Suraj asked me.

“I will come back after two-three days, but if you want, you can stay in the village for one-two weeks. Come later when your school opens” I said.

"No …. No…. What will we do in the village? We will also come with you. My wife Pratima said.

“Papa, I have to stay with Dadaji for the whole vacation. The school is closed anyway. What will I do when I come back? First of all, you never bring him to Grandfather and now I am going, then there is a hurry to come back. I will stay in the village only. Suraj spoke insistently.

“No… no… we are going only for a few days. Anyway, if you stay in the village, you will get spoiled. You will not be able to do your studies properly. My wife said while looking out of the window of the car.

I smiled listening to Pratima and started thinking, do children really get spoiled by living in the village? Is the environment of the village really very bad? Are there less rituals in our village than in the cities? Then I thought for a moment, hey, I too have grown up in the village. Then how did a girl who grew up in Pratima city become my wife today! Thinking of this, I smiled to myself. Well I didn't say anything to Patima and I kept walking silently.

After some time, our car took a U-turn from the highway and started moving on the unpaved roads of the village, then suddenly my eyes fell on a primary school.

“Manoj… stop the car here.” I ordered my driver to stop the car.

"OK sir"

As soon as the car stopped, I got out of my Toyota car and went to the gate of that primary school. My idol and my son Suraj were surprised to see this. After all, those people must be thinking what happened to them? What are you peeping in this small school.

"Papa, what are you looking at there?" Suraj called me.

“Sooraj this is my school. I used to study in this school in my childhood.

"Wow... Papa's school!" Suraj also came out of the car.

“Papa this is really a great school… wow!”

"Yes! This is no less than a paradise for me. Whatever I am today is because of this school.

"what are you doing there ? Let's go home soon" Pratima said calling me.

Hearing the sound of the statue, I turned back, then suddenly my foot hit a stone and I fell down.

At that time a cold wind came out hitting my ears and it seemed like he was trying to tell me something, trying to remind me something.

I looked at my feet and saw a big stone sunk into the ground. Above which only 3 to 4 inch part is visible. On seeing him, a scene from 18 years ago flashed in my mind.

This is the same stone on which I used to sit and gossip with Chandni and used to tease her about something or the other every day. And sometimes, while talking to her, he used to run away from there by tying her two braids of hair together.

Chandni was the only daughter of Deendayal Chacha of my village. We both studied in the same class. She was as smart and hardworking as she was beautiful. She always used to sit on the first bench in the class and always ranked next to me in the class.

I remember that day very well. When one day during school break me and Chandni were playing Ludo sitting on this cobbled stone. After throwing the dice, I jumped for joy when I got six. Due to which I fell down from the stone and my knees were peeled off. Due to which blood came out from my leg.

Seeing blood coming out of the knee, Chandni untied her braid-tying ribbon and tied my leg. By then the bleeding had stopped.

"Is it hurting anymore?" Chandni asked looking into my eyes.

"Now who has such a lovely friend like you, how can he feel pain?" I said smiling.

Saying "hut pagal", Chandni left shyly.

Well I don't know why she went shy at that time and I don't even know what I was trying to explain to her by that sentence. But I knew for sure that Chandni has started liking me and I too have started liking her.

In school, we used to spend all our time together. There was no need to find a new topic every day for both of us to talk, rather our old topic never ended.

This friendship of ours was about to be in danger at that time when both of us were about to leave primary school and go to high school.

Now I was beginning to lose faith in my own abilities or rather in the innocence of Chandni. I am Chandni's hero in this small primary school, but will I be able to be her hero in the big high school or will she consider a better boy than me as her hero?

I started thinking, seeing Chandni as beautiful as her, any boy would fall in love with her and when we go to high school, she would not know how many better boys than us would pass her around.

Why would Chandni choose me among so many good boys? Why would you like me?

Finally, both of us passed out from primary school and got admission in high school. But here exactly the opposite happened. In primary school where there were always more restrictions. We became free after coming here. Neither the village Guru ji used to meet nor the village peon uncle. Now we felt more free there.

Here Chandni started looking more beautiful as soon as she entered high school. In primary school, where Chandni used to go to school wearing a skirt and shirt throughout the day. Now she comes here wearing a salwar and a dupatta. Now she does not come here by making two small braids, but by leaving her hair open. And she has also made some braids by cutting her front hair. Which keeps on coming on his cheeks while reading again and again. She looks at us cross-eyed and lovingly removes the lock of her hair and then gets engrossed in her studies.

One day, just half an hour before the school was dismissed, all the children were playing in the ground. Me and Chandni were talking sitting in the ground. Chandni looking into my eyes said “Vikram I have started loving you, I love you”

"I love you too much I love you too " I said.

That's how our love story started just a few days after we entered high school.

Our love story went on for many years and the day also came when both of us were about to leave high school behind by giving our class 10th exams.

“Vikram…. Vikram… Vikram…. what are you doing will you stay the same Or go home too? Pratima shouted from the car.

Hearing the statue's voice, I immediately came out of my childhood memories and looked back. My sons Suraj, Pratima and the driver were all sitting in the car. And the driver was trying to call me by repeatedly honking the car horn. I bowed down to this school in my mind and sat back in the car.

"Papa, how far is Grandfather's house from here?" my son asked as soon as the car entered the streets of the village.

"Son ! just arrived You will be with grandpa in 2 minutes.

After some time we were standing at the door of the house. There my father and mother were already standing waiting. We all bowed down to mother and father by touching their feet. The driver took the luggage from the car and kept it inside the house. Pratima and Suraj went inside the house with their mother. But I have been looking outside for a while. Then my eyes fixed on the lane which used to go directly to Chandni's house through here.

I often used to go through this street to meet Chandni in the evening. Seeing this street after so many days, Chandni's memories came alive once again. His face, playful things started passing in front of the eyes as if it was just yesterday.

Separating those memories from myself, I entered inside my house. My house is still exactly the same as it used to be 12 years ago. I had never returned to the village in all these years. Whenever I wanted to meet my parents, they used to come to me. And anyway there was no reason left to come back to the village.

When I started going to Kota after 10th to prepare for engineering, Chandni got angry with me.

“Vikram, will you remember me after going to Kota or will I become your ex?” Chandni spoke politely.

"How crazy are you talking! What is this quota, I will live in any corner of the world, I will miss you and love only and only you.

"True ?" Chandni bid

"Muchchi"

While going to Kota, she was crying hugging me and I hugged her.

“Vikram son…. Vikram come inside. Son what are you doing at the door? Hearing my father's voice, I came back to my childhood memories. And suddenly felt a jolt. I left all these memories behind as before and went inside my house. Even after 12 years, the same familiarity in the houses, the same fragrance. All my things were in the same condition as before. The only thing missing was moonlight.

Chandni often used to come to my house to meet me on some pretext or the other.

It was almost 2 days since I came to my village, in these 2 days I roamed all those streets, farms and barns. Where earlier I used to roam in my childhood. And there was only one call coming from all those places, “Vikram where have you been all these days? After all, what complaint did you have with your village, which remained away from it for so many years? Have I failed to bring you up right? Didn't you like the atmosphere here?"

Now how can I explain to these fields and the narrow streets of the village that I used to miss you more than you used to miss me.

I also wanted to go back to those streets again, to go back to those fields and barns where they have grown so much playing and playing.

Now how can I explain to them that with increasing age, the responsibilities also increase, which sometimes one has to stay away from all these things despite not wanting to.

One day I was sitting in my room with my son Suraj walking towards the farm. Suddenly my eyes went to the broken almirah. Which was kept at the farthest end of the courtyard. Was visible from my room a little bit. Due to the arrival of the new almirah in the house, it was now kept out considering it useless. Just like when the father gets old, the son makes him sit outside the house in the hall.

I came out of the room, went to that almirah, opened the doors of the almirah and saw. Some of my books and old copies were lying in it. I came to my room with all those books and started looking at it.

Turning his notebooks and books smelled the same smell that used to come from my bag.

While turning the pages of the book, a slip came out from the class 10th science book. I quickly opened that slip, as soon as I saw that slip, it didn't take me long to understand that it was from when! It was the same paper that gave me Chandni.

After passing class 10th, I went to live in Kota and came back to my village after 3 months. Then Chandni came to my house and gave this paper.

I still remember that day very well, Chandni was looking very upset that day. I was sitting in the room preparing to return back to Kota in the morning. That's when she entered my room around 7:00 in the evening and cried and hugged me.

“Vikram, I also want to go with you, please take me somewhere from here, now I do not want to stay here” Chandni said hugging me.

“Chandni, what childish act is this? You know that I am going to study in Kota and there I live in hostel. How can I keep you there?" I told Chandni while explaining.

“Vikram, here people talk about us and you. All boys and women look at me with dirty eyes. Ever since some boys told papa about you and me. Since then he has been annoyed with me. And now Paap keeps talking about my marriage.

“Chandni, no problem, everything will be fine. See, when I will do something after studying, then I will marry you only" I said asking her tears in her eyes.

"Pucca"

"Pucca"

“Then promise that you will not forget me after going to Kota” said Chandni wiping tears from her eyes.

"Promise, I will never forget" I said.

After listening to this, Chandni tore a page from my mathematics copy kept next to me and handed it over to me and said, "Take this blank paper and when you become a big man by studying and writing, on that day you will draw an auspicious marriage on this blank paper." Write down the auspicious dates to get married according to the scriptures) and give it back to me. I will come to your house wearing the wedding dress on the same day.

Chandni gave me that piece of paper and quietly left my house. That day my mother overheard the conversation between me and Chandni. And he also saw Chandni leaving my room. Due to which my mother understood the whole story going on between us and advised her to stay away from Chandni, “Son, we are teaching you in good coaching and school by eating half bread and suffering so much. What will happen to all of us if you keep lying in all these things? And at the same time your life will also become hell. That's why leave all these things and focus on your studies.

At that time, I also obeyed my parents and considered it better to stay away from all these things and kept that blank paper in my 10th science book and went to Kota. Going there, staying away from all these things, prepared for engineering for 2 years and finally I got admission in a good engineering college. After going to college, my expenses increased and my family started working day and night for those expenses.

Time passed slowly and after completing my engineering, I got a good job as well.

I was so engrossed in Kota and college that the memory of this blank paper and moonlight slowly faded away and one day it disappeared.

After the job, got married according to the wishes of the family members. And he settled down with his wife.

I kept that paper in my pocket and threw the book on the bed and ran fast towards Chandni's house. Today these pieces of paper reminded me of the promise made to marry Chandni.

I reached Chandni's house running, there was no one in the house. I called “Chandni…. Moonlight….moonlight!..”

No response came from anyone. When I started coming out of the house, I heard a woman's voice like "Who?" Who is it?.. Whom are you looking for?

I turned around and saw that a woman was walking down the stairs in front of her, with a slender body like a neck. There was a child of 2-3 years in his lap. I could not recognize her after seeing her but she recognized me as soon as she came near me," Vikram...... you?"

“Chand…d..ni……?” I spoke trying to recognize.

“Yes, … yes Vikram, I am Chandni.”

Seeing her, I could not believe that she is the same mischievous, talkative and my beloved Chandni.

"How are you Vikram? How did I remember today after so many years?

“I am fine, but Chandni, what condition have you made of yourself? What happened to you looking like this?

“It is all a matter of one's own destiny, perhaps all this was written in my destiny. However leave it ! If you have come after so many years, then I make arrangements for some food and drink.

I sat on an old cot kept in his courtyard. And she started making tea on an earthen stove.

Amidst her disheveled hair and ugly saree, she was still looking as beautiful as she used to be in class 10th.

Chandni was being blown in the stove, that's why I extended the pieces of paper from my pocket towards her.

“Vikram, you forgot that paper should not be burnt. I will light the fire by blowing in the stove. Keep the paper with you” Chandni said while looking at me.

"Hey, I'm not giving it to burn" First you roll it and see.

Chandni looked at me for a few moments, after which she opened the pieces of paper and started looking at them.

She got emotional after reading it.

I had written today's date on that blank paper and just below that I had written "will you marry me".

His eyes welled up after reading this.

“Vikram, you took a long time to come from that house to this house. I wish they would have brought this proposal earlier.

“Yes, Chandni, I am late. I apologize to you for this. Please forgive me and marry me now. Friend today I have everything money, car, house. But there is no peace in life without you. ,

Chandni continued making tea without saying anything.

"Chandni, will you marry me now"

Chandni did not give any answer this time also, she silently kept burning wood by breaking it in the earthen stove.

“Chandni, are you listening to me? I am asking you something. I spoke in a slightly louder voice.

Chandni took a deep long breath and looked at me and said, "Vikram, why didn't you marry me, I will not ask and will not say that you have made a mistake by not marrying me, but if you marry me now, you are making a mistake." No, but you will make a big mistake. Because today you will not only cheat the society, parents but will also cheat your children and wife. …… Vikram The things left behind should be left behind. Anyway it is not your fault. Perhaps there must have been some deficiency in my love, otherwise I would not have lost you like this.

By then tea was also made. Chandni brought tea in a cup and handed it over to me and she once again took her child in her arms and started loving him.

We both sat there together for about 20 minutes but nothing happened. Neither he started talking nor I. Only both of them remained silent.

Now what would I even start talking about? What do you ask? Because I had lost all rights to ask her the moment I decided not to marry her.

After some time I returned back to my home from there. But while returning, I had returned with a great absorption in my mind. Unforgettable regret Because seeing the moonlight, I felt that perhaps I am responsible for this condition of the moonlight.

When I met some friends of the village, I came to know from them that Chandni kept waiting for me for many years. And she kept rejecting many marriage proposals while waiting for me.

He always used to tell people, “See, when Vikram completes his studies, he will come to marry me only.”

She had kept saying the same thing to everyone in her house too that whatever you guys do, I will not marry any other boy. And whenever I marry, I will marry only Vikram.

Time passed and one day his father passed away. Since then she became all alone. Meanwhile, Chandni got information about my marriage with some other girl. She could not tolerate what she heard. She slowly started falling ill. On the other hand, his mother's health was also not keeping well, due to which seeing the condition of his mother, he got married according to his mother's choice. That boy was an alcoholic. After marriage, she went to her in-laws house. There her husband used to beat her a lot, due to which she started getting sick even more. Then one day his mother died. She was even more broken inside.

When she came to love her husband too, she decided to live alone. After that she left her husband and went back to her mother's house with her child. And since then she is living here.

Hearing this story of Chandni, my heart trembled.

Today I was feeling as if there would be no poorer man in the world than me, who is not able to help anyone for his love.

From inside it seemed as if I am the most fallen person in the world who could not give love in return to a truly loving girl.

I had realized that I am the most greedy man in the world, I forgot my love in greed of money.

Returned back to Delhi after spending a week in his village. This time we had brought our parents along with us.

Today, I have everything available to live life, but still, somewhere in the heart, I feel something lacking which makes me realize that all happiness cannot be bought with money.

And at the same time, one regret will always remain in my heart, “I wish I could have done something for Chandni, if I had not broken her hope, she would have been living a good life today.”

Miss you Chandni, I'm sorry!
