Preface

Leadership is a unique quality that not everyone can have. If you have it then you can consider yourself lucky. To grow your career in the right direction and to inspire people around you, it is necessary to develop leadership qualities. However, before moving forward and improving your skills, it is important to understand the different types of leadership styles.

Like other qualities, the quality of leadership is also inherited. Many times we get influenced by the image of others (mostly parents and teachers) – how they want us to be and how they react to our decisions, we forget our real life and want to be what they want us to be. We start behaving in that way. If you think you have all the qualities to be a good leader but are in doubt, the following steps can help you get clarity.

types of leadership styles

Democratic Leadership - Your subordinates are a part of the decision making process in this type of leadership. This type of leadership focuses on the contribution of subordinates. However, the ultimate accountability for their decisions and actions rests with the leader. It is considered to be one of the most preferred leadership styles.

Transformational Leadership - This type of leadership is about influencing performance by improving oneself, group members, the organization as well as other factors. A transformational leader inspires others by setting high goals and encouraging them to increase productivity.

Strategic Leadership - In this type of leadership style there is a leader who is basically the head of a firm/company but does not share the views of the top management. He is involved with the entire team at all levels. He acts as a bridge to bridge the gap between new possibilities and the need for realism.

Democratic Leadership - This type of leadership style focuses on the boss. Here the leader keeps all the authority with himself. He takes decisions completely at his own discretion without consulting his team. He communicates with his team and expects immediate implementation from them. He alone is responsible for his decisions. There is no relaxation of any kind in this style. This type of leadership is often criticized.

Visionary Leadership - This type of leader recognizes the talents and needs of his team members. He makes collective efforts to achieve the desired results by establishing a vision of success.

Facilitated Leadership - If the team is doing less work then a facilitative leader helps his team members to run their working process efficiently by giving instructions from time to time. If there is a high functioning team then the leader can also adopt a lighter approach to work.

Cross-Cultural Leadership - This type of leadership is when dealing with people from different cultural backgrounds. Many leaders working in various organizations in the United States are cross-cultural because people from different cultures are employed there.

Laissez faire leadership - In this type of leadership, authority is given to the team members. All the members of the team are allowed to work and there is no interference from the leader. This is not considered an effective leadership style.

Transactional Leadership - This type of leadership process involves transactional work. Under this process the team members are recognized and rewarded for correctly implementing the ideas and decisions of the leader.
