The Karwa Chauth Story
Once upon a time, there was a wealthy merchant who had seven sons and one daughter named Karwa. All the brothers loved their sister deeply and always fed her first before eating themselves.
One day, Karwa returned home from her in-laws. In the evening, when her brothers returned from their business, they saw her looking very anxious. The brothers offered her food, but Karwa explained that she was observing Karwa Chauth’s nirjala fast and could only eat after offering water to the moon. Since the moon had not yet appeared, she was restless from hunger and thirst.
The youngest brother could not bear to see her in distress. He lit a lamp on a distant peepal tree and placed it behind a sieve. From a distance, it appeared as though the Chauth moon had risen. The brother told Karwa that the moon had appeared. Overjoyed, Karwa climbed the steps, offered water to the moon, and then began to eat. Later, her sisters-in-law explained that the fast had been broken incorrectly, which had angered the gods.
Upon learning the truth, Karwa vowed that she would not allow her husband’s last rites to be performed and would revive him through her devotion. She spent an entire year sitting near her husband’s body, caring for it, and collecting tiny grass growing around him.
A year later, Karwa Chauth arrived again. All her sisters-in-law were observing the fast. When they came to bless her, Karwa asked each of them to make her like them—a devoted, married woman. The sixth sister-in-law explained that due to the youngest brother’s intervention, the fast had been broken incorrectly, so only she had the power to bring Karwa’s husband back to life.
Finally, the youngest sister-in-law arrived. Karwa held her firmly and requested her to revive her husband. Seeing Karwa’s devotion, the sister-in-law pierced her little finger and placed the nectar from it into Karwa’s husband’s mouth. Instantly, her husband revived. Thus, through Karwa’s devotion and chastity, she regained her husband and her marital happiness.
