Proverb - Health Is Wealth

Proverb - Health Is Wealth
Proverb - Health Is Wealth

Meaning

The saying 'health is wealth' is obviously related to the wealth that a person stores in the form of his health. In other words, this phrase shows that if one is healthy, one has a lot of potential to acquire wealth through hard work and labour. But, on the other hand, if a person is not in good health, then his/her chances of working and earning money are greatly reduced. So, it means to say that if you want to become rich then the first condition is that you have to be healthy.

Example

Example is the best way to understand the true meaning of any proverb. Keeping this in mind, I have come up with some recent examples based on the proverb 'Health is wealth' which will help you understand this proverb better.

“John you should take care of your health first, after all, health is wealth.”

“I think the company should think about the health of its employees apart from just thinking about its profit. After all, they can only work when they are healthy!"

“There is no logic in doing business by compromising on your health because once a wise person has said that health is wealth.”

“Farmers are able to work in the fields because their bodies are very strong; Indeed, health is wealth."

“No one can accumulate wealth when he is in a sorry state of health because he cannot work” – Health is wealth!

Produce

The phrase 'health is wealth' was first used by Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American essayist, and philosopher who lived during the 19th century.

He used this phrase in reference to the American people, stating that health is more important than wealth and that health is the real wealth of any person.

However, this is not exactly the same as 'health is wealth', which Emerson wrote in one of his works in 1860; Yet, the meaning was much the same. He wrote this – “The first wealth is health”.

It is clear that Emerson placed health above wealth and believed that this was the true wealth any person could achieve.

With the passage of time, the phrase was simplified slightly; However, the meaning remained roughly the same.

Today, the widely used phrase 'Health is wealth' is nothing but a simplified version of what Emerson wrote in 1860 - "The first wealth is health".

extension of the proverb

The proverb 'Health is wealth' is the proverb which very wisely teaches us that we can get all the materialistic things, money, whatever we desire, only when we are healthy.

Health gives you the strength to work hard and achieve everything you ever wanted. On the other hand, if you are not healthy, weak and debilitated, then it will be really difficult for you to work and make your dreams come true.

In other contexts, it also means that money is of no importance as long as the person is unwell. Just imagine if you had all the wealth in the world. You can eat the most expensive food, even in the most expensive restaurant, but your health does not allow you to do so! What a sad event that would be. At that very moment wouldn't you want to sacrifice your extra money for your favorite food? In fact, this is what this phrase 'Health is Wealth' tries to teach us.

importance

The phrase 'Health is wealth' is a very important phrase, considering it tells us about the true wealth of life. The true wealth of life is actually health. If a person is in good health then only he will be able to work and take care of his near and dear ones.

In today's competitive environment, we often neglect our health and get involved in an intense race to become richer than anyone else we know. It is a blind race because eventually, when you lose your health, you will also lose your money or it will become unimportant to you. Wouldn't that be sad and disappointing; That is why, it is health that we should give the first priority. If we are healthy, then accumulating wealth is only a matter of time.

Short stories on 'Health is wealth'

As I have been telling earlier also that story is a better medium to understand the moral quality of a proverb. Today I have brought some stories for you so that you can understand the meaning of the proverb 'Health is wealth' more correctly.

short story

Once upon a time there was a man named Ralph. He was a very talented and hardworking employee of a law firm. For him, getting the best employee award every year was almost a given. He was working in this company for about ten years. Ralph and his family were overjoyed by his promotion and pay raise. But there was another side to this story as well. In his strong desire to move up the corporate ladder, Ralph has compromised his health over the years. He sometimes skipped lunch to attend board meetings; Worked late into the night, and often skipped dinner.

Once it happened that he became so ill that he could not move a single step by himself. He went to a doctor who suggested immediate hospitalization. The reason was an ulcer in his intestine, which had developed due to his irregular eating habits over the years. Ralph was in the hospital for over a month. Apart from this, during this time he also spent a good amount of money which he had earned in the past years by giving up everything from food and drink. When he was released from the hospital, it was something he could not forget. He told his friend that there was a calendar on the wall opposite his bed in the hospital, on which was written in bold letters – “Health is wealth!” In fact, he thought and vowed never again to neglect his own health.

short story

There was a boy who lived in an ordinary town. He was very good in studies and always wanted to become a doctor. He was so dedicated to his studies and preparations that many times he did not even eat food while his mother used to insist him not to do so many times but he did not listen.

One day he had to appear in the medical entrance examination. He was so engrossed in preparing for this exam that almost a week before the exam, he even stopped eating properly.

Although his parents were very worried, he was not. He thought that skipping meals for a few days would give him a little more time to prepare. At last the day has come. As always, his mother insisted that he have breakfast before leaving for the exam. And like everyone else, the boy refused the very reasonable request of his mother and left for the examination center without having breakfast.

The sun was too hot that day and the boy caught a bus for the half-hour journey. But even half an hour on an empty stomach seemed too long for him to tolerate. Suddenly he started feeling very weak and fainted in the bus itself.

Thereafter, he was dropped back to his home with the help of a police van. He could not even appear for the exam for which he was preparing for almost a year. He was speechless and his heart was broken.

However, his parents were very supportive and encouraged him to try again. Now he was a changed boy. He was studying again with the same enthusiasm but at the same time he was also eating healthy food.

Next year, he appeared in that exam and also got selected. He was overjoyed! When he got the results, he could hear his father's words after his first failure. His father had said – Remember son that health is the greatest wealth you can have.
