Meaning

This saying 'work is worship' establishes a connection between God and your work. No matter what religion you follow - Hindu, Muslim, Christian. Your everyday actions, whatever you do, whatever you say, etc. are worthy of worship if they bring glory to God and humanity as well. In other words – if you work with devotion and remain obedient and do not harm anyone, you can do it even without worshiping God.

It is possible that even God is more pleased with your work and not with your lot of worship. Your work is more superior than your worship which gives prestige to God.

Examples

Example is the best way to understand the true meaning of any proverb. Keeping this in mind, I have come up with some recent examples based on the proverb 'Karma is worship' which will help you understand this proverb better.

“A soldier who guards the border for months without visiting any temple or mosque; Even then, he is closer to God than us, who worship him daily. In fact, work is worship.

“Ronnie asked his doctor mother to accompany him to church this Sunday, but she said she had a very important surgery that morning. Ronnie's mind was filled with many atheistic thoughts about his mother. During the sermon he heard the words 'Work is worship'. Then all negative thoughts about his mother went out of his mind.

“God doesn't want you to worship Him everyday, He just wants you to do whatever you do with a pure heart, for everyone. Your actions are good like worship, if they are done with passion, honesty and good thoughts. Know, karma is worship.

“If you worship five times a day, even then your actions are dishonorable and reprehensible, then you are not going to get any benefit from that worship, even you get punished for doing so.”

“A person who does his work with full devotion and honesty, has nothing to fear from God, because he is worshiping God through his work.”

Origin

From where the exact origin of this proverb 'Karma is worship' has not been determined; However, a similar phrase is found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ by Paul the Apostle. He wrote in column 3:17 – “And whatever you do, whether in work or prayer, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” After this he writes - "Whatever you eat or drink, do everything for the glory of God."

Later on, this saying 'work is worship' came to be used by many scholars and leaders across the world. Swami Vivekananda has also mentioned it and even Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, has used it in his speeches from time to time.

Expansion of idea

The extension of this saying 'Karma is worship' includes the work done by us in our office and other places, from the places where God is worshipped.

Professionals go to the office; Farmers and laborers go to the fields – everyone works in his own field. Like, we go to temple, mosque, church for worship. This proverb combines two functions.

Work, as we know it now, is what we need to make a living, to provide for the needs of our loved ones. The word 'worship' is derived from do whatever we want; We must also link it with eligibility. Whatever you do, if it is worth doing and is being done with sincerity then surely it is equivalent to your worship.

Importance

This saying 'work is worship' teaches us to work obediently and honestly without getting distracted from our goal. It indicates the true value of our life. The true essence of life is what we do and how obediently we do it, but not how much time we spend in worshiping the Lord.

What we do, God is more pleased with our deeds than with our worship. In fact, He can happily ignore worship if our deeds are great. This phrase teaches us that God just wants us to be honest in our conduct than to worship him all the time.

It leads us on the path of success in whatever we do, such as the qualities of honesty and devotion.

Short Stories on 'Work is Worship'

A story is a better medium to understand the moral quality of a proverb. Today I have brought some stories for you so that you can better understand the meaning of the saying 'Karma is worship'.

Short Story

Once upon a time there was a lazy farmer who did not go to the fields and sat in the temple all day, thinking that he would be able to live his life with the dry drought given by the people. That's why whatever grains, food etc. people used to offer to God, the farmer used to take it to his home and cook dinner and eat it. He was living the life of his dreams – not doing any work, resting all day, yet still getting enough to eat.

It so happened that, once the village was hit by drought, then there was also famine. The villagers would have barely enough food left, luckily they had some grains saved over the years. But, there was one man who did not even have a grain of grain, and he was that poor lazy farmer. Due to the famine, no one was making offerings to the Lord in the temple on behalf of the villagers and because of this the farmer was facing hunger every day. He was cursing himself every moment for not working and sitting in front of the temple all the time. If he had done some work instead of just worshiping for months; Surely he would not have been a victim of hunger today. In the end, that farmer learned a lesson that 'work is the real worship'.

Short Story

Two friends lived in a faraway Indian village. One was a poor but hardworking blacksmith while the other was a lazy priest in a small village temple. The priest often jokes to the blacksmith that no matter how hard he works, God will only favor the priest because he regularly worships.

The blacksmith was so busy with his daily work that he never got time to visit the temple. These two used to meet only late at night or in village meetings. With the passage of time and years of hard work, the blacksmith had become the richest man in the village. He decides to donate a sum of money to the village temple and is called for a small ceremony.

There he met his old friend, the priest, who realized the true value of toiling after all this time. When Lohar was asked about the secret of his success, he simply said four words "Work is worship". In fact!! The priest was lost in thought.
